The Insurance Institute of Liverpool was founded on the 8 January 1907, just before the institute of London. At the time there were numerous. Insurance company head offices in Liverpool; Royal Liverpool, London & Globe, London & Lancashire, Law Union & Rock, Thames & Mersey, British & Foreign, Queen, State, Royal liver & Liverpool Victoria to name just a few. Liverpool was the most vibrant places in the country for Insurance.
Initially membership was about 350, and by the end of April 1907 Liverpool was holding its own examinations. In 1908 Liverpool hosted the insurance institute’s annual national conference. At the time Charles Alcock (Liverpool Institute’s founder) was the CII national President, Charles was general manager of the Royal and the first of seven national Presidents to come from Liverpool. Since 1908, five further national conferences have been hosted by Liverpool, the latest being in 1983.
At one time the area of the Liverpool institute stretched from Mid Wales to the River Ribble on the West Coast. Liverpool encouraged new institutes to develop, including Chester (1947) North Wales (1954) and the Isle of Man (1987); these institutes function in their own right. Local committees affiliated to liverpool were established in Southport and Warrington. Sadly these have now fallen by the wayside due to centralisation by insurance companies, causing members to move out of these areas. Warrington ceased to function in 1987 and Southport closed its doors in early in 2001, when the few dedicated members who had kept had to finally admit defeat
Liverpool members have won many national examination prizes. Six members have won the Rutter Gold Medal; ten have won the Morgan Owen prize, including Peter Nield who is the only person to have won it three times. Only three people have won it twice. Liverpool members have enjoyed great success in the national debating and quiz competitions. They won the quiz twice during the last 18years and were also finalists on other occasions.
Today Liverpool has in excess of 1400 members and a strong management on its council. The council embrace change and continue to deliver the services that members want, including quality professional examinations that the industry demands
